Description
The novel dominated the Victorian age as the literary genre the best met the expectations of the existing reading public: to be cultivated and entertained at the same time while reading about people like them, in situations in which they were very likely to find themselves, in surroundings that were very familiar to them. The modern period that predominantly emerged as civilisation of the eye and rediscovered the (commercial) benefits of popular literature – very often when associated with visual media – could not miss the opportunity to exploit the rich repository of subjects and characters offered by the Victorian novel. It is the aim of this course to investigate a few such instances of modern film versions of Victorian novels and discuss their modes of representation, similarities and specificities.
Romanul a dominat epoca victoriană, fiind cel mai întâlnit gen literar în așteptările publicului cititor: de a fi cultivat și de a fi amuzat în același timp, citind despre oameni ca ei, în situații în care aceștia s-ar putea probabil găsi și în anturajuri foarte familiare lor. Perioada modernă, care în principal a apărut ca civilizație a ochiului și a redescoperit beneficiile (comerciale) ale literaturii populare – de foarte multe ori atunci când este asociată cu mass-media pe plan vizual – nu putea rata ocazia de a exploata acest depozit bogat de subiecte și personaje oferite de romanul victorian. Acesta este scopul acestui curs, și anume, de a investiga câteva astfel de cazuri de versiuni moderne de filme adaptate după romane victoriene și a discuta despre modurile lor de reprezentare, despre similitudinile și particularitățile pe care le conțin.
